Visual Music Using Film

There is a great way to make visual music that only a few people are taking full advantage of: using old film clips. This technique can allow people more familiar with film editing to create high quality visual music videos, and it can be a very effective method. If the right film clips are chosen, you can have a visual collage of moving images that fit the music and work to create a cohesive whole.

A good example of this would be this piano waltz video. It uses old film clips shot of a vacation through several European towns and cities. The images of the cities go well with the dignified piano piece and work to create a nice overall feeling. This is the ultimate goal of visual music, to use a combination of music and visuals to create a new complete work of art that conveys something together.

Clips from films and videos should be explored by other artists looking for a way to make visual music without expensive software or specialized programs. With a simple video editing program, and some looking through different internet archive sites, all the materials you need to produce good visual music videos are right there.

Jon Hopkins Visual Music Video

This is a very engrossing and beautiful electronic song by Jon Hopkins. The visual aspect starts with a changing color section and then moves into a morphing multi-colored shape. It does a good job of getting more intense with the music toward the latter end of the middle of the song, but other than that I think its a pretty lame visual for this song. The whole video just seems like a thrown together affair to get a video up for the song. Wish they would have made some higher quality and more dynamic visuals for such a great piece of music.

Visual Music Video: Trebuchet

This is a visual music video for a composition titled "Trebuchet". Although this is more of a sound installment or experiment than music, the whole is a pretty interesting. The visuals are completely connected to the sound, which really is the way to go for an effective piece of visual music. The sparseness of the sound is matched with the visual designs and their surrounding darkness. The whole thing gives a very paranoid and robotic feeling.

Im not sure what kind of value this has to humans as art. It conveys a rather dark and cold mood, and there really isn't much to get from it. However, it is very interesting to watch, and kind of impressive in its craziness.
